Unveiling the artwork for our 60th anniversary

colourful horse artwork

The original artwork, by Andrew Ormandy, was presented to the Race Club this week, with current Broken Hill Mayor Tom Kennedy in attendance.

The Broken Hill St Patrick’s Race Club began in 1965 when John Toms, a well known local trainer thought of an idea to boost local racing and help alleviate the desperate financial position of the local Catholic schools. Dr Gordon Ormandy was the Club’s inaugural President and in 1968 was given the honour of being the first Life Member.

Gordon’s wife Joy had a love for the Fashion Of The Field and it was not uncommon for her on the eve of a race meeting to be finishing a dress she had made. Joy received Life Membership in 2005.

The artwork depicts the connection between the Church (stained glass) and racing, with the vibrant palette reflecting the colours of the Fashion Of The Field.

The names of the 84 Life Members and 5 Life Patrons are displayed in a diamond shape signifying the 60 years of the St Patrick’s Race Club, including our newest Life Member Charyne Bradley.

The horse is detailed in Argent Silver, fitting for Broken Hill.

Artist Andrew Ormandy is the son of the late Dr Gordon and Joy Ormandy, with the entire family still great supporters of our Club.
